From the exterior, you’ll find a small, unassuming grocery store nestled in a quiet community on a small side street. Then, as you step through the doorway into Gordon's, you’ll discover an eclectic blend of historic “Mom & Pop shop” meets today’s favorite gourmet snacks, fresh, local produce, gifts and more.

THREE GENERATIONS OF GORDON'S

In 1923, a then 50-year old Harry Gordon, Sr. moved from Pennsylvania to Hagerstown, Md. Harry Sr., a former postmaster, opened Gordon’s Grocery at 101 Cypress Street (its current location to this day) and so began Gordon's tradition of serving the surrounding neighborhood with food, a butcher shop, and friendship. Harry Sr., his wife, Armaytha, and child, Harry Jr., lived on one side of the home, and ran Gordon’s Grocery on the other.

Harry Jr., would go on to work as the circulation manager for Hagerstown’s local newspaper, the Herald Mail, until he and his wife, Jane, began helping Harry Sr. with the store in the mid 1940s. Harry Jr.’s children, Tony, Cynthia, and John would then take over the family business in the 1970s, developing a variety of new, homemade deli items including Gordon’s fan-favorite crab cake, Cream of Crab soup, blue cheese dressing, and Cheese Ball.

Today, the youngest Gordon sibling, John, continues to run the store and finds his true passion in seeing the faces of longtime and new customers alike, carrying groceries to customers’ cars - just as his grandfather did until he was 98, and finding the latest, delicious gourmet goods and local produce for everyone to enjoy.
